SmashPad Review Says Champions Loses Its Edge Over Time
SmashPad has published a review of Pokémon Champions, and its headline takeaway is not especially glowing: the game reportedly feels less distinctive the longer you spend with it.
For competitive players, that is a notable criticism because Champions is positioned around a focused battle format rather than a traditional RPG loop. If the core appeal starts to blur after extended play, the question becomes whether its systems create enough long-term strategic identity once the first impression wears off.
The review’s angle suggests that Champions may initially stand out through its format and presentation, but that repeated play exposes similarities to existing Pokémon battle experiences. That does not automatically mean the competitive side lacks depth, especially with Champions using its own ruleset, Mega Evolution, and Stat Points system. Still, perception matters. A game built around repeated ladder sessions, team testing, and tournament prep needs to feel sharp after dozens or hundreds of matches.
We will be watching for more detailed competitive impressions as players spend time with the final build and start solving the early metagame.
