ProfSkarmoryYT’s winning team was built around a clear sand mode. Tyranitar brought Tyranitarite with Sand Stream, while Excadrill carried Focus Sash with Sand Rush, giving the team an immediate weather-based attacker with Earthquake, High Horsepower, and Iron Head. Tyranitar was not just a weather setter either, using Rock Slide, Knock Off, Dragon Dance, and Protect to threaten both spread pressure and setup.
The rest of the roster gave the sand core multiple ways to control the pace of games. Staraptor with Staraptite and Intimidate added Tailwind alongside Close Combat and Brave Bird, giving the team a second speed-control option outside of Sand Rush. Milotic’s Sitrus Berry set with Competitive, Icy Wind, Ice Beam, Scald, and Protect also punished opposing stat drops while offering another form of speed control. Sinistcha filled a stabilizing role with Rocky Helmet, Hospitality, Strength Sap, Matcha Gotcha, Rage Powder, and Protect, helping redirect attacks and keep partners positioned safely.
Gholdengo was the main special pressure point. Life Orb, Good as Gold, Modest, Make It Rain, Shadow Ball, Nasty Plot, and Protect gave ProfSkarmoryYT a strong setup sweeper that could operate next to the team’s redirection and speed control. Overall, the composition had a straightforward offensive identity, but it was not one-dimensional: sand, Tailwind, Icy Wind, Rage Powder, Dragon Dance, and Nasty Plot all gave it different ways to convert board position.
Across the top teams, weather was a major theme. ProfSkarmoryYT and KamikazekidGC both used Tyranitar, while Charizard with Charizardite Y appeared on Rahzar, luckystrike, and BritaBagel. Rain also appeared in the top eight through rpr1020’s Pelipper with Drizzle and BritaBagel’s Politoed with Drizzle.
Kingambit was another major presence, appearing on Rahzar, luckystrike, toasty_yhg, and Kravell, always with Defiant. Whimsicott appeared on both Rahzar and luckystrike with Prankster, Tailwind, Encore, and Protect. Sneasler showed up on luckystrike, rpr1020, and toasty_yhg, while Raichu with Raichunite X appeared on luckystrike, rpr1020, and BritaBagel.
Item-wise, Focus Sash was common across the top eight on picks such as Excadrill, Whimsicott, Kingambit, Basculegion ♀, Venusaur, Pawmot, and Sneasler. Life Orb also appeared repeatedly on Gholdengo, Garchomp, Whimsicott, Basculegion, and Rillaboom.
Takeaway for ladder players: bring speed control and a coherent weather plan, but make sure the team still has secondary modes when the weather exchange gets contested.
